About SAIBPP
The South African Institute of Black Property Practitioners, known as SAIBPP, is a non-profit organisation. It was founded in 1996 to help transform the property sector. Its aim is to bring people from previously disadvantaged backgrounds into ownership, development and management roles in property. The institute is based in Johannesburg.
The property sector is wide. It includes valuers, agents, developers, asset managers and facilities managers, among others. Historically, ownership and senior roles in this industry were held by a narrow group. SAIBPP's work is meant to change that, so students who join gain a professional network as well as funding.
Over the years, SAIBPP has built programmes around skills development, enterprise development and policy work. It also hosts an annual convention that draws industry leaders and government speakers. In addition, it offers members mentorship and networking. These activities help young professionals find their feet in a field that was closed to many black South Africans for a long time.
How SAIBPP supports students
The SAIBPP Bursary Fund helps students who study towards property careers. Recent adverts listed property studies, property development, property management, property valuation, real estate and property finance. Both undergraduate and postgraduate study, up to Honours level, were included.
Funding normally covers tuition fees. Depending on the year, it may also help with study materials, allowances and accommodation. However, the exact package is not fixed, so read each advert closely. Students are also asked to become student members of SAIBPP and to take part in community outreach.
What to know before applying
Applicants must be South African citizens who are in matric or have completed it. They must study full-time and show both good academic results and genuine financial need. Therefore, strong marks alone are not enough.
For the 2027 intake, the closing date was 16 October 2026. Applicants downloaded an official form and emailed it with certified copies of their ID and results, proof of household income, two testimonials and a motivational essay of up to 500 words. One testimonial had to come from an education official. Late applications were not accepted.
No work-back obligation was confirmed in the adverts we found. Even so, check the conditions in each year's form. Dates and rules differ from year to year. Prepare your documents early, ask referees well ahead of time and write your essay with care. Finally, use the contact details on the official SAIBPP website if anything is unclear.
If you are still in matric, plan your subject choices with a property career in mind. Mathematics, accounting and economics support valuation, finance and development courses, although entry rules differ by university. Meanwhile, keep a record of any volunteer work, because community outreach is part of what the fund expects.
