African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) South Africa

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a pan-African network of centres of excellence in mathematical sciences. Its founding centre was established in Muizenberg, Cape Town, in 2003, and the network has since grown to include centres in several other African countries. AIMS operates as an independent, donor-funded, not-for-profit academic institute offering fully funded, one-year taught postgraduate programmes to talented students from across Africa, rather than as a formally chartered university in its own right.

Since 2023, Google DeepMind has partnered with AIMS South Africa to fund a dedicated 'AI for Science' Masters stream, as part of a multi-year commitment supporting a cohort of scholars each year and aiming to build AI research capacity across the African continent.
