About Department of Correctional Services Bursary
The Department of Correctional Services Bursary helps unemployed young South Africans, and department employees, to study toward qualifications the department needs. It is offered by the Department of Correctional Services. The most recent call we could verify was for the 2023 academic year, and it closed on 14 October 2022.
Calls are not guaranteed every year, and fields and dates change. Check the department's website or phone the department to confirm whether a new call is open.
Funding Details
The listing we reviewed does not say what the bursary pays for, and it does not describe a work-back obligation. Ask the department to confirm both in writing before you accept an award. Government bursaries of this kind usually come with a contract.
Only complete applications are considered, because missing items may lead to disqualification. Keep copies of everything you submit. The call also says not to contact the department about closed bursaries, so wait for the next notice instead of phoning about an old round.
Where You Can Study
You must study at, or be accepted by, a recognised and accredited South African tertiary institution. The call did not name one university, so choose any accredited institution that offers your qualification.
The department asks that your institution supply several documents on its letterhead, including the course curriculum, the fee outline and the proof of acceptance. Request these early, because institutions can take days or weeks to prepare them. Late applications are not accepted.

It included agricultural science, criminology, education, finance and logistics, information technology, nursing, occupational health and safety, penology and correctional services, psychology, risk and disaster management, security management and supply chain management.
It also funded artisan and engineering studies, food services, graphic design and textile and clothing design. Medicine and surgery were funded at degree level. Students with disabilities were encouraged to apply.
The department prefers applicants who study toward careers it needs. These include nursing, psychology, criminology, security management and supply chain management. Recognition of Prior Learning students were also included in the 2023 call. If your field is not on the list, you are unlikely to qualify, so read the list before you apply.
