About Department of Mineral Resources Bursary
The Department of Mineral Resources Bursary funds disadvantaged South African students who want to work in mining and energy. The bursary is offered by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, which uses it to build skills the sector needs. Recent calls were for full-time undergraduate study at a South African university or university of technology.
The call for the 2025 academic year closed on 20 December 2024. We found no confirmed call for a later year, so check the department's website before you apply.
Funding Details
The notices we reviewed do not list what the bursary pays for, so ask the department to confirm tuition, accommodation and allowances in writing. The 2025 call said old or altered application forms lead to automatic disqualification. Applicants who heard nothing by 31 January were told to treat their application as unsuccessful.
Competition for state bursaries is strong. Submit a neat, complete application, with every document certified. Use the official form for the current year, because the department treats old or altered forms as grounds for disqualification. Keep proof that you submitted your application.
Where You Can Study
You must study full-time at a South African university or university of technology. Postgraduate study was not funded in the notices we reviewed. Your institution must accept you in one of the listed fields.
Your institution must be a South African university or university of technology. Check that it offers the exact qualification you want, such as mining engineering or geology, because not every institution offers every field on the list. Keep your acceptance letter safe.

Fields of Study & Who Can Apply
An earlier notice listed these fields: a BSc in Physics and Chemistry, and chemical, electrical, electro-mechanical, industrial, mechanical, metallurgical, mining, nuclear and rock engineering. It also listed environmental health and management, geology and mining survey. The 2025 call described the fields as mining and energy related.
Applicants needed strong results in Mathematics and Physical Science, at least level 6 in recent notices. The department gave preference to women, to students with disabilities and, in 2025, to first-year students.
The department aims this bursary at students who face real financial barriers. Rural applicants, women and students with disabilities receive preference, and so do first-year students in the 2025 call. Sources disagree on the exact age limit, so confirm it in the current notice before you apply. Remember that you must also be unemployed.
