About Johannesburg Water Bursary
The Johannesburg Water Bursary funds students who want to become engineers and finance professionals in the water sector. Johannesburg Water awards a small number of bursaries each round and offers its bursars employment after they graduate. The most recent round we could verify was for the 2025 academic year and closed on 24 January 2025.
The company advertises its fields each year. Earlier rounds funded civil engineering and finance. Because the list changes, read the current call before you apply.
Funding Details
Johannesburg Water describes its bursaries as comprehensive full-time awards, but the notices we reviewed do not list each cost item. Ask the company to confirm what it covers. Bursars sign an employment agreement and join Johannesburg Water after they finish their studies, so plan to work for the company when you graduate.
The company makes only a few awards in each round. In the 2022 call, for example, it advertised five bursaries across three fields. Competition is therefore strong, and only shortlisted candidates are contacted. Keep your phone and email active after you apply.
The company contacts only shortlisted candidates. In the 2022 call, applicants who heard nothing within about a month of the closing date were told to treat their application as unsuccessful. Complete every field on the application form, because incomplete forms are not considered.
Where You Can Study
You must study full-time at a recognised tertiary institution in South Africa. The notices we reviewed do not name a particular university, so choose any accredited institution that offers your qualification.
The company asks for full-time study at an accredited tertiary institution. Because the earlier rounds funded second-year students in some fields, check the current call to see whether it targets first-year or later-year students before you apply.

The 2025 call targeted BSc degrees in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering. A 2022 call funded second-year students in civil engineering (BEng Tech and BSc) and in finance or financial accounting (BCom). Women and people with disabilities receive preference.
Applicants must meet minimum academic requirements and show financial need. They also must not have held a bursary before, apart from NSFAS funding.
Johannesburg Water is a municipal entity that supplies water and sanitation to Johannesburg. Its bursary aims to feed engineers and finance staff into the company. Showing a real interest in the water sector in your application can only help your case.
In the 2022 call, the finance bursary went to a student interested in revenue analysis and in the accuracy and completeness of revenue. The engineering bursaries went to civil engineering students. Preference in that call went to women and people with disabilities, so mention your circumstances on the form if they apply to you.
Application Procedure
In earlier rounds, applicants emailed the completed form to a separate address for each field of study. The company contacted shortlisted candidates only. Applicants who heard nothing within about a month of the closing date were told to treat their application as unsuccessful. Check the current call for the email addresses and the closing time.
