About SAFCOL Bursary
The SAFCOL Bursary has funded South African students in forestry, engineering and business fields. The South African Forestry Company, a state-owned plantation business, ran the scheme. Its last call that we could trace closed on 14 October 2022 and covered the 2023 academic year.
We could not find a newer call on the SAFCOL website. In addition, its careers page now describes bursaries as support for staff. Therefore, treat this forestry bursary as closed until SAFCOL publishes a new advert. The terms below come from a published copy of the 2022 advert, so they may change.
Funding Details
The 2022 advert covered registration fees, tuition, textbooks and other learning material, accommodation, meals and a stipend for each semester. It did not publish a total value.
The award carried a work-back obligation. After graduating, recipients had to work for SAFCOL for as long as they received funding. So a three-year award would mean about three years of service. Many of its operations are rural, so ask where you could be placed. You should also ask what you must repay if you fail or leave your course.
Where You Can Study
The call did not name specific universities. Instead, you needed a place at a recognised and accredited South African tertiary institution, and you had to meet its entry requirements.
Forestry courses are offered at only a few institutions, so check your options early. Ask the faculty whether your qualification matches the field that SAFCOL lists. Keep a copy of your acceptance letter too, because the 2022 call asked for it.

The 2022 call was open to South African citizens who were in Matric or had completed it. Applicants had to study, or plan to study, full-time in a listed field at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
SAFCOL gave preference to previously disadvantaged students, women and people with disabilities. It also favoured young people who lived near its plantations and communities that had signed social compacts with the company.
The forestry and technical list included Forestry, Agro-Forestry, Wood Science, Plant Production, Plant Pathology, Genetics, Horticulture, Environmental Management, Eco-Tourism, Health and Safety Management, and Civil, Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering. The support list included Business Management, Communications, Financial Management, Human Resource Management, Human Settlement Development, Internal Audit and ICT, Legal, Marketing and Sales, Project Management, and Risk Management.
Application Procedure
In 2022, applicants emailed the form and documents to bursary@safcol.co.za, with the bursary name in the subject line. We could not confirm that this route is still in use, so check the SAFCOL careers page or email info@safcol.co.za first.
