About AECI
AECI Limited is a South African chemicals and mining services group. Its roots go back to 1924, when African Explosives and Industries was registered to supply explosives to the gold and diamond mines. The company took its current name in 1976, and it listed on the JSE in 1966 under an earlier form of the name. Its head office is in Woodmead, Sandton.
Today AECI serves far more than mining. Its businesses make explosives and provide blasting services, and they also produce industrial and specialty chemicals, water treatment products and food ingredients. The group operates in more than 20 countries. Its long history means that it has hired and trained chemists and engineers for many decades.
The first factories stood at Modderfontein, Somerset West and Umbogintwini. The group marked its 100th year in 2024, and industry press has described its aim of becoming one of the three largest mining explosives suppliers in the world. That ambition needs a steady flow of young technical people, which is one reason the bursary matters.
How AECI supports students
AECI backs skills development through bursaries and learnerships. Its bursary programme has supported study in chemical engineering, chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, computer engineering and mining engineering. Some listings also mention other technical fields. One recent report said the programme would award about 60 bursaries, although numbers vary by year.
Reported benefits include tuition fees, textbooks and accommodation. Bursary holders may also gain mentorship, networking events and industry insight. In addition, AECI runs a chemical process operator learnership for young people who want practical plant training instead of a university degree. This gives school-leavers a second path into the chemical industry.
What to know before applying
Applications run through the careers section of the AECI website, aeciworld.com. You create a profile and upload documents such as your CV, ID and matric certificate. Applicants normally need Mathematics and Physical Sciences at Grade 12. For the learnership stream, extra rules apply, such as medical fitness and a willingness to complete forklift training.
Some sources say funders in this field expect bursary holders to work back the years they received. We could not confirm AECI's exact terms, so ask about them in writing before you accept an offer. Closing dates and the list of fields also change from year to year.
Plan ahead if you want to apply. Keep your latest results, a certified ID copy and proof of registration or admission in one folder. Then check the careers page regularly, because AECI posts its opportunities there. A student who shows strong marks in maths and science, and who shows interest in chemicals or mining, will stand out.
