Agricultural Research Council (ARC)

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is South Africa's principal agricultural research institution, established as a Schedule 3A public entity under the Agricultural Research Act 86 of 1990. It reports to the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) and conducts research, technology development and technology transfer across the crop, livestock and natural-resource sciences.

ARC funds a postgraduate bursary programme, awarding a limited number of Masters and Doctoral bursaries each year, to build a pipeline of agricultural scientists, economists and researchers for the sector and for ARC's own research institutes. The programme targets fields such as agricultural economics, agribusiness management, environmental and natural resource management, and related disciplines.

Bursary holders are paired with senior ARC researchers through a structured mentorship component and may be offered work placement opportunities at ARC or affiliated organisations, alongside access to ARC's research facilities and laboratories.
