About Armscor

Armscor is the Armaments Corporation of South Africa. It is a state-owned entity that buys defence equipment and services for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). Parliament created its forerunner in 1968, when international sanctions limited what the country could import. Today Armscor works for the defence portfolio, and its head office stands at 370 Nossob Street, Erasmuskloof, Pretoria.

Its work covers four main areas: acquisition, research and development, business development, and the Armscor Dockyard in Simon's Town. The dockyard maintains and refits navy vessels, and Armscor has managed it since 2005. The organisation says it works with more than 15 defence partners and runs over seven testing and innovation sites. As a result, it needs a steady supply of skilled engineers and scientists.

How Armscor supports students

Armscor builds that supply through its Youth Development Programme. The programme includes a bursary scheme and an internship programme, so students can move from the classroom into real defence work. The Armscor bursary has backed full-time study in fields such as aeronautical, electrical, electronics, mechanical, mechatronics, naval and marine engineering. Past calls have also listed chemistry, biochemistry, physics, astrophysics, computer science, information technology, cyber security and artificial intelligence.

Reports on earlier intakes say the funding covers tuition fees, accommodation and meals, and prescribed books. Vacation work is added where possible. However, the list of fields and the level of cover can change from year to year, so treat these details as a guide and not a promise.

What to know before applying

Armscor has described its target students as academically strong South Africans, including those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. Past adverts asked for strong results in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and English, usually at achievement level 5, 6 or 7. Applicants must also be South African citizens who study, or plan to study, at a recognised institution in the country. In addition, they should show a real interest in working in the defence industry.

Whether a bursary holder must work for Armscor after graduating is not confirmed on the pages we reviewed. For that reason, ask about any service obligation before you sign a contract. Closing dates and amounts also vary, and they appear in the Youth Development Programme brochure and current adverts on the official Armscor website.

Prepare early. Gather your latest results, a certified copy of your ID and proof of registration or admission. Then apply well before the closing date, because defence-sector funding is competitive and places are limited. A student with a clear plan for a technical career in defence has the best chance of standing out.
