About Avemel Group

Avemel Group is a South African transport and logistics business with its head office in Durban. Its divisions include Avemel Transport, Avemel Logistics (established in 2005), the EAN Group and Avemel Truck & Car Rental. Together, they move freight, supply fuel and provide equipment and vehicle rental to other companies across Southern Africa.

Avemel Logistics has been expanding its footprint in recent years. It opened a logistics park in New Germany, Durban, built to handle heavy and abnormal cargo such as steel coils and plates. The company also moves hazardous cargo and runs container depots in Durban and Johannesburg. As a result, it needs people who understand supply chains, finance and technology.

How Avemel supports students

The Avemel Group EmpowerED Bursary Scheme is the company's national education programme for young South Africans. It is aimed at students who are entering their first year at a recognised tertiary institution. Funding is meant for three broad areas: supply chain and logistics, finance and administrative studies, and IT-related fields. These match the skills a freight and fleet business uses every day.

According to published information, the scheme provides financial support towards first-year tuition. It also offers exposure to a logistics group and a pathway from study into work. Avemel can then place graduates in practical roles within its own operations after they complete their studies.

Durban is home to the busiest container port in Southern Africa, which explains why a logistics group is based there. Trucks, warehouses and fuel supply all feed the freight that moves through the port and along the road corridors to Johannesburg and beyond. Graduates in logistics, finance and IT can find real work in such a business. For example, a supply chain graduate may plan routes and stock, while an IT graduate may support fleet tracking and billing systems. Gather your ID, proof of acceptance and academic record early so you are ready.

What to know before applying

The bursary is open to students from all provinces, but there is an important condition. Successful candidates must be willing to work at Avemel's Durban-based operations after graduating. The service period equals the length of time they were funded. For example, a student funded for one year would be expected to work back for one year. Think carefully about whether you can commit to Durban before you apply.

The 2026 intake opened on 7 January and closed on 20 February, with shortlisting at the end of February. Dates will probably differ in other years, so confirm the current timeline on the official Avemel website.
