About Breede Valley Municipality

Breede Valley Municipality is the local government for Worcester, De Doorns, Rawsonville and Touws River in the Western Cape. Its head office is at 53 Baring Street in Worcester. Like every South African municipality, it delivers basic services such as water, electricity, roads and community facilities to the people in its area. The municipality also helps local young people pay for study. Its Mayoral Bursary Fund is the main example. The fund gives residents a chance at further education when family income is tight. Over time, it also helps build a group of skilled people who understand the needs of the area.

How the Mayoral Bursary Fund helps students

The money does not go to the student. Instead, the municipality pays it into the bank account of the student's tertiary institution. Students can use it for registration fees, class fees, exam fees and books. It can also help with accommodation, meals or transport. Each award covers one study year only, so students must apply again if they need support in a later year.

Because the amounts are limited, think of this bursary as a top-up. It works best next to other funding rather than as your only source of support. Fields of study linked to local government service delivery receive priority. However, students in other fields can still apply.

What to know before applying

You must live in the Breede Valley area, which means Worcester, De Doorns, Rawsonville or Touws River. A matric pass average of 50% or higher is needed. You must study, or plan to study, at an accredited South African tertiary institution. The municipality does not consider students who already hold a bursary from another funder, and students who receive NSFAS funding may not apply.

The municipality accepts only its official application form, and you must attach every document it asks for. Forms go to the Manager: Human Resources, Private Bag X3046, Worcester, 6849, or you can hand them in at the HR office in Baring Street. Late applications are not considered. For the 2026 intake, the closing date was 8 December 2025. In recent years the call for applications has appeared in October or November, so watch the municipality's website and local notices from the middle of the year onwards.

The published terms do not describe a work-back or employment obligation. Recipients are not required to work for Breede Valley Municipality after they graduate. Even so, the fund is meant to strengthen the local skills base, so students who plan to return to the area after their studies are well placed to use what they learn.
