About Canyon Coal
Canyon Coal is a South African coal mining company with its head office in Sandown, Sandton. It says its purpose is to improve lives and grow the economy through responsible mining and fair business partnerships. It is a subsidiary of the private investment group Menar.
The company runs several collieries. Khanye is an opencast mine near Bronkhorstspruit in Gauteng, and it employs around 700 people, including contractors. Gugulethu lies near Hendrina in Mpumalanga. It produced its first coal in January 2024 and has about 690 workers, again including contractors. Another project, Bekezela near Springs, extends the life of the Ukufisa mine.
Coal still plays a big part in South Africa's energy supply, so mines need skilled people to run them safely. For that reason, Canyon Coal invests in the next generation of miners, engineers and scientists. Many of these students come from communities close to its operations. The company also shares news with staff and stakeholders through its own newsletter and promotes careers for women in mining.
How Canyon Coal supports students
Canyon Coal has advertised an annual bursary programme in recent years. Published calls said the award covers full tuition fees, accommodation and a book allowance. Fields have included mining engineering, electrical engineering, metallurgy, geology, mine surveying, and environmental science with safety management. Earlier calls also listed accounting and human resources. However, the list changes from year to year, so always read the current advert.
Applicants must be South African citizens who have passed matric. Students already at university usually need an average of at least 65% in their major subjects. In addition, you must be registered at, or provisionally accepted by, a South African university. Past calls gave preference to previously disadvantaged students living near the mines, students in financial need, women and students with disabilities.
What to know before applying
Canyon Coal's mines sit in different towns, so the communities that count as local can change between calls. Past adverts named Delmas in one year and the Msukaligwa area in another. Read the advert closely to see whether your address qualifies for preference.
Applications are normally sent by email, together with certified copies of your documents. These include your ID, matric results, academic record, proof of registration and proof of residence. You must also show household income and add a motivational letter. Earlier calls closed early in the year, so start preparing your documents well before then.
Shortlisted candidates in a past round were told they would hear back within about 30 days of the closing date. Published adverts did not clearly describe a work-back obligation. Therefore, ask about service conditions and vacation work if you receive an offer. For the latest fields, closing dates and contact details, check the official Canyon Coal website.
