Columbus Stainless

Columbus Stainless is South Africa's only producer of stainless steel flat products, and the largest single-site stainless steel producer in Africa. Based in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, the fully integrated plant has been operating since 1966 and now has a rolling capacity of around one million tons a year, exporting to markets across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, and the Far East.

Columbus Stainless is majority owned by the Spain-based Acerinox group, with the Industrial Development Corporation holding the remaining stake - giving the bursary programme both an international parent company's resources and a direct link to South African industrial development policy.

The company funds bursaries in Accounting Sciences, Finance, and several engineering specialisations, reflecting the mix of technical and financial skills needed to run a large, fully integrated steel plant. Because Columbus Stainless draws much of its workforce from the surrounding Middelburg and Witbank area, the bursary specifically prioritises students who already live in that community.
