About Denel Dynamics
Denel Dynamics is a South African missile and aerospace company. It forms one division of Denel, the state-owned defence group. Its headquarters are in Centurion, Gauteng, and it grew out of the old Kentron business. It later passed through the name Denel Aerospace Systems before taking its present name.
The company designs and builds guided weapons and related systems. Its well-known products include the Umkhonto surface-to-air missile and the A-Darter short-range air-to-air missile. Finland bought Umkhonto in 2006, which marked a significant sale to a western country. In 2015 the South African Air Force ordered A-Darter missiles. Denel Dynamics also works with unmanned aerial systems.
How Denel supports students
This work needs highly trained engineers and technicians. Denel therefore treats skills development as a long-term investment. The group has awarded bursaries for engineering study, and one report shows 83 bursary students at various universities in the 2015 academic year. It has also offered internships for engineering students and graduates.
At school level, Denel Dynamics has helped learners in nearby high schools with extra mathematics and science lessons. Staff teach these classes on weekends and during holidays. The idea is to make engineering a real career option for young people early on.
Artisan training matters too. The Denel Technical Academy in Kempton Park trains apprentices who then gain industry experience and later qualify as artisans. For many learners, this offers a route into aerospace work that does not begin with a university degree.
Fields that suit the industry include aerospace, mechanical, electronic and electrical engineering. Other technical areas, such as software, materials and manufacturing, may also be relevant.
Denel has also taken part in school-level recognition. It has held prize-giving events for top learners in mathematics and science, and it has honoured apprentices from its technical academy. These events show that the group wants a steady flow of skilled people.
Be careful with similar names. Rheinmetall Denel Munition is a separate group business, and it has advertised its own bursary programme through universities. If you see an advert, check which company is actually offering the funding.
What to know before applying
Denel's bursary arrangements are handled at group level and have changed over time. Specific eligibility rules, amounts and closing dates for Denel Dynamics are not confirmed here. Check the Denel and Denel Dynamics websites for the current position before you apply.
Defence work is sensitive. As a result, security screening may form part of the hiring process for bursars and employees. A strong record in mathematics and physical science also helps. Prepare your results, ID and a clear statement of why you want to work in aerospace.
Finally, remember that Denel has faced financial pressure in recent years. Funding programmes can therefore change, so rely on official announcements rather than old listings.
