About Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality
Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality is a Category B municipality in the north-western part of Mpumalanga. It falls within the Nkangala District, and its head office stands in Siyabuswa. It also runs unit offices at Mbibane in Libangeni and Mathanjana in Nokaneng.
The municipality's 2014 to 2015 development plan described an area of 60 villages and 31 wards, with about 250,000 residents. Those figures are now old, but they show the largely rural and village-based nature of the area. The same plan named the Siyabuswa Industrial Park as the main industrial site, and it pointed to agriculture, tourism and manufacturing as other opportunities.
Like other local councils, the municipality delivers services through its own departments. These include Technical Services, Finance, Community Development Services, and Planning and Economic Development. Its recent notices cover projects such as the Weltevreden Water Treatment Works, which shows how much of its work rests on water and infrastructure.
How Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality supports students
The municipality runs a Mayoral Bursary Scheme for local students who want to study full-time at a university in South Africa. The current form names three fields: civil, electrical and mechanical engineering. These fields match the municipality's need for people who can plan and maintain roads, power and water systems. See our Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality Bursary page for the details of this round.
The scheme looks beyond marks alone. Its form asks about family income, leadership and extra-mural activities, and it also asks for two references from respected people in your community. So your standing at home and at school can count as well.
What to know before applying
This scheme serves local residents, so you should be ready to prove where you live. Published copies of the advert ask for a confirmation letter from a ward councillor, and that letter can take time to obtain.
The form also asks whether you hold or have held another bursary, especially from government. Answer that honestly, and ask the Human Resources section whether other funding affects your chances.
Call the head office on 013 973 1101 or email info@moroka.gov.za before you submit. The form on the municipal website carries a 2026 title but gives the current closing date, so it is worth checking that nothing has changed. Keep a copy of everything you hand in.
If you already study at a tertiary institution, have your year of study and student number ready, because the form asks for both.
