About eThekwini Municipality
eThekwini Municipality is the metropolitan council that runs Durban and the towns around it on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. It was created in 2000 and now serves roughly four million residents across about 2,300 square kilometres. Its area includes Pinetown, Phoenix, Umhlanga and Chatsworth, and it is home to one of the busiest ports in Africa. The council works from City Hall in the centre of Durban.
A city of this size needs a steady supply of skilled professionals. Roads, water, electricity, sewerage and housing all depend on engineers, planners and property specialists. As a result, the municipality runs a bursary programme to grow its own pipeline of talent instead of competing for scarce graduates later.
How the eThekwini bursary supports students
The programme focuses on engineering and the built environment. The most recent call listed Civil, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering. It also named Architecture, Property Valuation and Quantity Surveying. However, the fields on offer can change from year to year, so read each advert carefully.
The funding is broad. In the recent intake, the bursary covered tuition fees, accommodation, examination fees and a book allowance. A once-off computer allowance was also available in the second year, provided the student kept to the bursary agreement. Because residence costs are included, this funding can make a real difference to a student from a low-income home.
Engineering and property graduates are in demand in Durban, where the municipality manages water networks, electricity supply, stormwater and large housing projects. A funded student can therefore expect a wide range of practical work after graduating. Keeping your marks up is wise, because the agreement sets conditions that you must meet each year.
What to know before applying
Applicants must be South African citizens with a matric certificate and strong academic results. Study must be full-time at a public university. First-year applicants need proof of acceptance and their matric results. The municipality has also stated a preference for students who have completed their first year, for people with disabilities, and for groups under-represented in the sector.
In the latest round, applications went through the municipality's online recruitment portal. Applicants uploaded certified copies of their ID and certificates, their academic transcripts and an acceptance letter on university letterhead. Shortlisted candidates were then invited to an assessment interview. The 2025 intake closed on 17 January 2025, and late applications were rejected.
The advert did not mention a work-back period. Even so, some municipal bursaries ask recipients to serve afterwards, so read the conditions in your agreement before you sign. Dates and fields vary every year, which means you should check the official eThekwini website for the current call. Prepare your certified documents early so that nothing delays your submission.
