Environmental Resources Management, known as ERM, is a global consultancy that helps organisations manage environmental and sustainability issues. Its clients include companies in mining, energy, infrastructure and manufacturing, as well as public bodies. ERM advises on environmental impact assessments, regulatory compliance, climate strategy, health and safety, and social performance. In South Africa, the firm has offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

How ERM supports students

The ERM bursary is a postgraduate award. It is meant for unemployed South African graduates who already hold a relevant undergraduate degree. They must want to continue their studies in environmental, earth or natural sciences, engineering, economics or social sciences. The study must take place at a recognised South African university.

Selection is not based on marks alone. ERM's experts from its different service lines review each application. They look at academic performance, the quality of an essay and the chosen area of study. In recent calls, applicants had to choose one of several essay topics on environmental issues and write up to 3,000 words. This tests whether a candidate can think clearly and communicate well, which matters in consulting.

Successful candidates sign a contract with ERM Southern Africa. The contract is reviewed each quarter against the student's academic results, so progress matters throughout the year. The details of any service obligation after graduation are not confirmed, so ask about this in the current call.

What to know before applying

Applications are made online through the ERM careers portal. Recent calls asked for a certified ID copy, a certified recent academic transcript, a CV and the essay with a plagiarism declaration. All files had to be uploaded as PDFs. The most recent call we found closed on 28 November 2025. Therefore, expect the next window to open late in the year.
