Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality

About Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality

Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality sits in the Sekhukhune District of Limpopo. Its offices are in Marble Hall, and the area was known as Greater Marble Hall until 2010. The municipality covers just over 2 000 square kilometres and serves a mostly rural population of more than 120 000 people across 16 wards.

Like every local municipality, it is responsible for basic services such as water, roads and sanitation. It also prepares an integrated development plan and a yearly budget. The council is led by a Mayor, a Speaker and a Chief Whip, and the municipality shares its documents and notices on its official website. The main switchboard is open on weekdays during normal office hours.

How the municipality supports students

Many rural councils struggle to attract engineers, planners and finance officers. Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality tackles this gap through a bursary scheme for local residents. The idea is simple. If young people from Marble Hall and surrounding villages qualify in scarce fields, they are more likely to build careers in the area.

The scheme gives priority to applicants from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and deep rural communities. Women and students with disabilities are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must be South African citizens who live inside the municipal area. They must also study full time at an accredited public university or college. Listings from earlier years show a wide range of fields, including engineering, accounting, town planning and health sciences. Because the fields change, you should confirm the current list with the municipality.

What to know before applying

Application forms are usually available from the municipal offices in Marble Hall, from its satellite offices, or from the municipal website. Past notices asked for a Grade 12 certificate or results, certified ID copies of the applicant and parent or guardian, proof of the guardian's income and a motivation letter. Forms were normally handed in to the Office of the Municipal Manager. Faxed or emailed forms were not accepted in some years, so follow the current instructions closely.

The municipality has not published a fixed work-back period. However, it may ask successful students to sign an agreement. Ask about any service obligation before you accept funding. In addition, apply early, since municipal budgets limit the number of awards, and closing dates differ from year to year. Students who live in the area may find extra help close to home. The municipal offices can explain how the process works and where to collect forms. Ask your school's career guidance teacher to help you certify documents and write a clear motivation letter. In that letter, explain why you chose your field and how you plan to serve your community after you qualify.
