ERWAT, the Ekurhuleni Water Care Company, is a municipal entity established in 1992 and majority-owned by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, with the City of Johannesburg and Lesedi Local Municipality holding smaller shares. It is custodian of 19 wastewater care works with a combined treatment capacity of around 696 megalitres a day, providing bulk wastewater conveyance and treatment to more than 3.5 million people and thousands of industries across the Ekurhuleni region, and has been recognised nationally for wastewater management excellence, including six Green Drop Awards.
ERWAT funds an external bursary because running and maintaining that scale of infrastructure depends on a continuous supply of qualified engineers, scientists and biotechnologists, and because as a municipally-owned entity it has a direct interest in developing technical skills within the community it serves. The bursary covers tuition, books, accommodation and a monthly stipend for students who have completed first year in engineering, biotechnology or chemistry at a Gauteng public institution, with preference given to applicants who live in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan area.
