Exness is an international multi-asset online trading and fintech company. It offers brokerage services in instruments such as forex, commodities and indices to clients in many countries. It holds regulatory licences in several jurisdictions around the world.

Exness is not a South African company. Its scholarship in South Africa is a corporate social investment partnership, not a locally registered financial services offering. This matters for applicants, because the university handles the process.

How Exness supports students

In 2023, Exness launched the Exness Fintech Scholarship in partnership with the University of Cape Town (UCT). It was described as the first scholarship of its kind offered at university level by a broker. The aim is to back strong students who cannot afford postgraduate study. Exness has said it wants to help the technology sector in South Africa and to fill gaps in fields where scholarships are scarce.

The first group of recipients studied for postgraduate degrees in areas such as computer science and applied mathematics. They won their places through excellent academic records and a tough round of interviews. Since then, the programme has run for several further intakes.

The scholarship supports master's study in fields linked to technology and finance. UCT lists computer science, data science, machine learning, financial engineering, mathematics, artificial intelligence, computer engineering and distributed ledger technology. It covers tuition fees in full. It also covers living expenses either fully or partly, depending on the student's financial need.

What to know before applying

You deal with UCT, not Exness. Applications go to UCT's Postgraduate Funding Office, and the university's notice explains what to send. In the 2025 round, applicants emailed a CV, a motivation letter that stated household income, and a copy of their UCT acceptance letter.

Several rules applied in recent rounds. Applicants needed an offer from UCT in one of the listed fields. They needed an average of more than 70%. Household income also mattered. A gross family income under R350 000 a year qualified for a full scholarship, and an income between R350 001 and R800 000 qualified for a 75% award. Priority went to South African students, although the scheme was also open to international applicants.

These figures belong to past calls and may change. The terms and closing date for the next intake are unconfirmed, so watch the UCT funding pages and news channels for each new call. Apply for your UCT place early, because you need the offer before you can apply. Finally, ignore anyone who asks for payment to help you get this scholarship, since the process is free and handled by the university.
