About Exxaro

Exxaro Resources is a JSE-listed South African mining company with its head office in Centurion, Gauteng. It was formed in November 2006, when Kumba Resources was unbundled and its coal and other assets joined Eyesizwe Coal. The deal was a major black economic empowerment transaction, and Exxaro grew into one of the country's largest black-empowered and managed resources companies.

Coal is its core business. The Grootegeluk mine in the Waterberg, near Lephalale, is a large coal operation that supplies power stations such as Matimba and Medupi. Exxaro also holds interests in mineral sands and in the US-listed company Tronox. In recent years it has moved into renewable energy to prepare for a lower-carbon economy.

How Exxaro supports students

Mining needs engineers and technical specialists, so Exxaro funds students who study in these fields. Published listings for its bursary programme name civil, electrical, industrial, mechanical and metallurgical engineering. They also name mining engineering and mine surveying. The company has also run feeder and access programmes for students who need extra support to get into university.

Reports say the bursary covers education costs, food and a monthly allowance. In addition, students receive in-service training and practical exposure at the company's operations. This hands-on time helps them understand real mine sites before they graduate. Exxaro is also known to spend money on communities near its mines, including education projects.
