Fasken (formerly styled Fasken Martineau) is an international business law firm with a South African practice dating back more than 130 years, founded in Grahamstown in 1879 before relocating to Johannesburg. In October 2012 Fasken announced a merger with Bell Dewar, a long-established Johannesburg law firm founded in 1889 with particular strength in mining, energy, infrastructure and project finance work across Africa. The merger took effect on 1 February 2013.
The combined South African practice now trades under the Fasken name, while remaining incorporated locally as Bell Dewar Inc. Following the merger, Fasken's Johannesburg office (based in Sandton) became one of the largest law firm operations on the African continent, pairing Fasken's international network with Bell Dewar's deep local expertise in mining, energy, infrastructure, finance, and corporate/M&A work.
As part of its transformation and talent-pipeline commitments, Fasken's South African practice runs a bursary programme for law students, alongside vacation work and candidate attorney programmes.
