The Foschini Group, known as TFG, is one of the largest retailers in South Africa. Its portfolio includes 39 brands across fashion, jewellery, cosmetics, sportswear, electronics and homeware. These range from Foschini and Markham to Totalsports. The group trades from more than 4,900 outlets in 22 countries and employs over 50,000 people. Its head office is in Cape Town.
The Data Science and Leadership Fellowship
TFG's main funding programme for students is a postgraduate fellowship rather than a general retail bursary. It supports young people who want to become leaders in data science. This makes sense for a retailer. Stock planning, customer analytics and supply chains all depend on people who can work with large amounts of data. By funding the study of future experts, TFG helps to grow a scarce skill in the country.
The fellowship pays for a research or coursework Master's degree in data science or a related field. Students study at one of five designated Tier One public universities in South Africa. Funding covers the first and second year of study.
The package is wider than tuition. It includes living and meal allowances, equipment and textbooks. Fellows also receive coaching and mentoring from industry leaders. In addition, they attend a learning and networking event at TFG's head office in Cape Town.

The fellowship is open to South African citizens. The selectors look for academic excellence, along with creativity, innovation and leadership. Although everyone can apply, preference goes to candidates from underrepresented groups.
