About the Gauteng City Region Academy

The Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) is an agency of the Gauteng provincial government that focuses on skills and talent in the province. It was launched in 2008, under the Gauteng Department of Education, to carry out the Gauteng Human Resource Development Strategy. Its offices are at the old JSE building in Diagonal Street, Newtown, Johannesburg.

The academy has a broad mandate. It runs the provincial bursary programme and career education for learners in Grades 8 and 9. It also supports skills programmes for young people aged 18 to 35 and training for public servants. When the bursary project began in 2008, it aimed to help 1 500 students.

How the GCRA supports students

Today the bursary supports undergraduate and postgraduate study at accredited South African institutions. These include universities and TVET colleges. The programme covers the full cost of study, with conditions set out in each student's bursary contract. Earlier descriptions of the programme linked it to scarce skills that matter for the province's growth. Recent listings, however, say that fields across education, commerce, science, engineering, health sciences and the humanities may qualify.

Some groups receive priority. The official site mentions students from no-fee schools, the Special Schools Improvement Programme (SSIP) and schools for learners with special educational needs in Gauteng. As a result, young people from lower-income homes often have a stronger case.

What to know before applying

The official bursary site lists clear entry rules. You must be a South African citizen between 18 and 35 years old and live in Gauteng. You will need to prove where you live, for example with a utility bill or a letter from a councillor.

The usual documents are a certified ID, matric certificate and results, proof of household income, a letter of motivation of up to two pages, and proof of registration or an acceptance letter. Applicants with a disability may also need a medical report. Incomplete applications are likely to be rejected, so check every item twice.

Applications are made online through the GCRA bursary portal. A recent call closed on 28 February 2026, and the portal showed the programme as closed for 2026 until the next round opens. Dates change every year, so register on the portal and watch for new announcements.

Read the bursary contract carefully before accepting. It sets out the conditions of funding, including what happens if you fail or stop studying. Finally, the GCRA does not charge for applications, so avoid anyone who asks for payment.
