About the Gauteng Provincial Government

The Gauteng Provincial Government runs the affairs of South Africa's most populous province. Gauteng includes Johannesburg, Pretoria, Ekurhuleni and the surrounding areas. The Office of the Premier leads the administration, plans for the long term and tracks how departments perform. Its offices are in Marshalltown, Johannesburg.

The government covers many sectors, including health, education, housing, infrastructure and economic development. All of these need skilled people. For this reason, the province invests in education and training for young South Africans.

How the province supports students

The best-known route is the Gauteng City Region Academy, or GCRA, bursary. The GCRA is the province's learning and development arm. Its bursary supports academically deserving and financially needy students at accredited higher education institutions. Both undergraduate and postgraduate study have been included in past calls.

The programme is open to many fields of study, although some calls give extra weight to scarce and critical skills. Recent calls described support for tuition, books, accommodation, a transport allowance, a once-off laptop allowance and a living allowance. However, the details can change, so read each year's advert closely.

The province has also set aside large amounts to fund top matric learners from no-fee schools. A provincial announcement in January 2024 mentioned R560 million for about 4,000 learners. Such programmes show that the government treats bursaries as a tool for fighting poverty and inequality.

The province also runs other development routes through the GCRA and its departments, such as learnerships and internships. What to know before applying

The GCRA bursary targets South African youth, mostly aged between 18 and 35. Applicants who live in Gauteng receive preference. You will normally need certified copies of your ID, your latest results and proof of where you live. Parents' or guardians' IDs and payslips are also needed to prove family income.

Closing dates differ each year. For example, the 2026 call closed on 28 February 2026, which is early in the year. As a result, you should prepare your documents well before the call opens.
