About Gert Sibande District Municipality

Gert Sibande District Municipality is one of three district municipalities in Mpumalanga. Its seat is Ermelo, and the district covers about 31,800 square kilometres in the south-east of the province. Until 2004 it was known as Eastvaal. The council then took its present name in honour of the anti-apartheid activist Gert Sibande.

The district brings together seven local municipalities: Govan Mbeki, Albert Luthuli, Mkhondo, Msukaligwa, Lekwa, Pixley Ka Seme and Dipaleseng. Towns such as Secunda, Bethal, Standerton and Piet Retief fall inside its borders. The area matters to the national economy because of its coal, energy and farming industries. About one million people lived here at the 2011 census.

How the district supports students

Like many district councils, Gert Sibande uses bursaries to build skills that its local municipalities struggle to find. Past bursary calls named Agriculture, Engineering, Environment Management, Finance, Geology, Public Management, and Tourism and Hospitality. These fields match the work of a rural, resource-rich district. For example, engineers keep water and roads running, while finance graduates strengthen municipal budgets.

Earlier calls were aimed at residents of the district. Applicants had to be South African citizens who lived in the area, and who had completed matric or were in matric. They needed to study full-time at a recognised South African institution and to be unemployed. Applicants who already held another bursary did not qualify. Preference went to previously disadvantaged candidates, particularly women and people with disabilities.

Local government is also a stable career path. Municipalities need qualified people in finance, planning, engineering and environmental management, and smaller local councils often struggle to attract them. A district bursary therefore benefits both the student and the community. Graduates return home with skills, while the councils gain staff who already know the area and its needs.

What to know before applying

The most important condition is the work-back period. Past bursary holders agreed to work for one of the local municipalities in the district for about three years after graduating. In other words, the bursary works as an investment in the region's own public service. Read any contract carefully before you accept it.

Past application packs asked for a completed form, a certified ID copy, matric results, proof of residence, proof of parents' income, an acceptance letter and a motivational statement. Gather these early, because certified copies take time to arrange.

The district does not necessarily advertise a bursary round every year, and amounts and closing dates change from call to call. Older closing dates are only a guide. Therefore, check the official website or contact the offices in Ermelo to find out whether a call is currently open before you apply.
