About the Hexagon Trust
The Hexagon Trust is a charitable, non-profit organisation based in Durban. It was founded in 1987 and exists to help students reach their full educational potential. The trust works independently, so it is not tied to one company or industry.
Over the years, the trust says it has helped more than 18,000 students enter tertiary education. Many of them come from families that could not otherwise pay the fees. As a result, the Hexagon Trust has become a familiar name among Grade 12 learners from low-income homes, especially in KwaZulu-Natal.
How the Hexagon Trust supports students
The trust funds undergraduate study in three broad areas. These are science, engineering and commerce. If you want to study something outside these fields, such as law or the arts, this bursary is not the right fit.
The award covers registration fees and tuition fees. It also includes a book allowance. It does not appear to pay for accommodation or living costs, so many students need to plan for those separately. Check the latest call to see exactly what is included.
Selection looks at more than marks. The trust considers financial need, a solid academic record and a commitment to study hard. It also values a wish to contribute to the community. Therefore, a strong motivation letter and honest household information can help your case.
Because the trust funds only three fields, it helps to think about the career you want. Science graduates move into laboratories, research and teaching. Engineers work on infrastructure, energy and manufacturing. Commerce graduates enter accounting, finance and business management. Whatever you choose, ask your school for help to check that your Grade 12 subjects meet the entry rules of your chosen degree. Mathematics marks usually matter most for engineering and many science courses.
What to know before applying
The current criteria are aimed at South African citizens in Grade 12 who are about to start first-year studies at a South African tertiary institution. You should be registered, or able to register, at a university or similar institution. The trust also states that applicants must be willing to undergo a credit check, which is a standard step in checking a family's financial position.
Applications are made online. First, you create a profile on the student portal. Then you complete the form and upload your supporting documents. After that, you can follow your progress through email and the portal dashboard.
Closing dates change each year, and a work-back obligation has not been confirmed. Submit early and keep your documents ready, including your ID, results and proof of income. For the latest rules, read the official Hexagon Trust website or use the contact details listed there.
