About Illovo Sugar
Illovo Sugar is one of the largest sugar producers in Africa. It forms part of ABF Sugar, which belongs to Associated British Foods. The group grows and mills sugar cane in several African countries. In South Africa, the business is centred on KwaZulu-Natal, and its office is in Umhlanga Rocks near Durban.
According to the company's South African website, Illovo runs three mills in KwaZulu-Natal: Sezela, Noodsberg and Eston. It employs roughly 2,900 people there. Most of its cane, about 4.8 million tonnes in a typical season, comes from independent growers, with a smaller share from its own farms. The cane yields more than 550,000 tonnes of raw and refined sugar a year.
Sugar supports many jobs, especially in rural areas. Growing cane, milling it and refining sugar all need trained people. These include agronomists, engineers, chemists, finance staff and marketers. As a result, Illovo invests in young people who live near its farms and mills. Because so many independent growers supply the mills, farming knowledge is as valuable as engineering. Soil science, crop management and farm business skills help growers get more cane from the same land. That is one reason agriculture sits on the bursary list.
How Illovo supports students
Illovo Sugar South Africa runs a bursary programme as part of its wider youth development work. The programme also includes a school STEM project, career guidance and mentorship. For example, a recent news report told the story of a Soil Science student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. This student moved from Illovo's high school STEM programme to a bursary. Bursary holders also meet senior executives at a meet-and-greet event.
Earlier calls offered bursaries in agriculture and in chemical, electrical, industrial and mechanical engineering. Some adverts also listed finance and marketing. The funding was aimed at first- and second-year students at universities and universities of technology. Public adverts did not clearly state what the bursary covers, so ask before you assume.
What to know before applying
Past calls had clear rules. Applicants had to be South African citizens from previously disadvantaged groups. Only self-funded students qualified, which means students with another bursary or NSFAS funding were excluded. Preference went to students from communities around Illovo operations.
In one recent round, applications ran through an outside recruitment platform rather than directly through the company. You needed a certified copy of your ID, proof of registration and your academic record. Feedback was sent only to successful candidates, about four weeks after the closing date. Therefore, do not wait for a reply if you hear nothing.
Published information does not confirm a work-back obligation. Closing dates also differ between years. Visit the official Illovo Sugar Africa website for the current process and deadlines.
