Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency

About the Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency

The Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency (IUCMA) is a public water institution based in Mbombela, Mpumalanga. The National Water Act of 1998 allowed South Africa to set up local agencies that manage water at catchment level. The Inkomati agency was the first of these to be established, and it took several years before it was fully operational. Today the IUCMA looks after the Inkomati-Usuthu Water Management Area.

Its work covers the rivers, dams and groundwater that farms, towns, forestry companies, mines and nature reserves all depend on. The agency plans how water is shared, authorises water use, monitors compliance, manages data and involves local stakeholders in decisions. As a result, it needs scientists and technical staff who understand water quality, hydrology and the environment.

How the IUCMA supports students

To build this pool of skills, the IUCMA runs an external bursary programme for young people from its own region. Recent calls have listed qualifications such as a BSc or B degree in Environmental Science, a BSc in Hydrology or Water Resource Management, and BSc degrees in chemistry, biochemistry or microbiology. Geohydrology, geomorphology and botany have also appeared on the list.

According to published listings, the bursary pays for registration, tuition and examination fees. It also covers prescribed study material, meals and accommodation, and it adds a monthly stipend. In other words, the funding is meant to remove most of the costs of full-time study. The exact package can change from year to year, so always read the current advertisement.

Beyond the bursary, the agency has advertised a graduate internship for unemployed graduates. Reports describe it as a 24-month development programme based in Nelspruit. Therefore, students who finish their degrees with IUCMA support, or without it, can also look at the careers page for practical work experience.

What to know before applying

Earlier calls asked for South African citizens who live in Mpumalanga, inside the water management area. Applicants needed a matric pass and an overall average of about 65%. Students who already study at a tertiary institution needed roughly 60%. Studies had to be full-time at a recognised South African institution, and a student could not hold another bursary at the same time. These rules come from past advertisements, so confirm them for the current year.

Closing dates have fallen early in the year. For example, the 2024 call closed on 2 February and the 2026 call closed on 6 February, with applications sent by email. Because the window is short, prepare your certified ID, proof of residence, matric results and proof of registration well in advance.

Whether a bursary holder must work for the agency after graduating is not clearly confirmed in the sources we reviewed. Check the bursary contract and the official notice for any service period. Finally, use only the contact details published on the IUCMA website and be careful of websites that charge a fee for bursary forms.
