About KwaDukuza Municipality

KwaDukuza Municipality is the local government authority for the KwaDukuza area on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast. It sits within the iLembe District and covers towns such as KwaDukuza (formerly Stanger), Ballito and Shakaskraal. The area is one of the faster-growing parts of the province, so the demand for housing, roads and skilled people keeps rising.

The municipality runs its student bursary from its own budget. It is not a corporate social investment project. The aim is to build a pool of qualified local people who can help the area grow.

How the municipality supports students

The bursary is open to residents of the KwaDukuza area who want to study towards an undergraduate diploma or degree at a public university or university of technology. Recent calls have listed fields such as the built environment (including architecture, civil and electrical engineering, quantity surveying and construction management), commerce, environmental management, occupational health and safety, housing, library science and community development.

Earlier information on the scheme explained that about 60% of the funds go to fields outside the national scarce-skills list. The remaining 40% is set aside for scarce skills. However, the split can change, so treat it as a guide only.

The award is modest compared with corporate bursaries. It pays towards registration or admission fees, not the full cost of study. Reported caps have differed over the years, from about R5 000 in older calls to R10 000 in more recent ones. Confirm the current amount in the latest advert, and plan how you will cover tuition, accommodation and living costs.

What to know before applying

Recent calls required you to live in the KwaDukuza area, hold a matric with university entrance and study full-time. You also needed a strong academic record, proven financial need and no other bursary or NSFAS funding. The municipality gives priority to students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

The application pack normally includes certified copies of your ID and matric results, proof of admission, a fees statement, your parents' or guardian's income documents and proof of residence in the municipality. Forms are usually available from the municipal website, the youth centre or local libraries, and they go to the Youth Development Office. Closing dates usually fall early in the year, and recent calls closed in January. Late applications are normally rejected, so submit early.
