KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health

About the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health is the provincial government body that runs public healthcare in one of South Africa's most populous provinces. Its head office is the Natalia Building on Langalibalele Street in Pietermaritzburg. The department oversees provincial hospitals, community health centres and clinics. It also manages medico-legal mortuaries and licenses private healthcare facilities.

Serving urban and deep rural communities is a constant challenge. Because of this, the department needs a steady flow of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals. Its website lists bursaries under career opportunities, alongside internships and vacancies.

How the department supports students

The department offers bursaries for health-science studies. Past adverts have covered medicine and nursing, and other medical fields have appeared too. Applicants usually come from KwaZulu-Natal and need a good academic record. They must show proof of application or registration at a tertiary institution. Normally, they may not hold another bursary or already have another degree or diploma.

Older adverts described a sliding scale based on parental income. Full support covered tuition, meals, books and accommodation for the lowest income band. Higher bands received less, down to tuition only. These figures may have changed, so check the current notice.

A second type of bursary targets existing staff. The 2023 advert funded full-time postgraduate diplomas in ten nursing specialities. Examples are critical care, midwifery, emergency care, mental health, oncology and palliative nursing, and theatre nursing. Only permanent professional nurses of the department could apply. They needed SANC registration and at least two years of clinical experience in the speciality.

What to know before applying

Service obligations matter here. Undergraduate bursars are expected to serve their internship in the public service for a period matching the bursary. Nurses on the speciality bursary signed a contract to work for the department for at least one year after qualifying. Therefore, treat the bursary as a commitment to public healthcare, not only as financial help.

Applications normally begin with a form. Past guidance said to collect it from the human resources office of the government hospital nearest to the family home in KwaZulu-Natal. Closing dates change every cycle. For example, the nursing speciality round closed on 24 November 2023. Always confirm the current dates on the department's official website.

The department's scale makes it a major employer. Because it staffs hospitals and clinics across the province, graduates can work in district hospitals, regional hospitals and primary care clinics. Rural postings can teach a young professional a great deal, from emergency care to community health. As a result, a bursary may suit students who want to serve close to home.

Gather your ID, academic results and proof of registration early. Late or incomplete forms are a common reason for rejection.
