Lephalale Local Municipality serves the town of Lephalale in the Waterberg District of Limpopo. Large energy and mining projects have shaped the area over the past two decades. Eskom's Matimba and Medupi power stations are located here, and so is Exxaro's Grootegeluk coal mine. As a result, the local economy and job market depend heavily on this industrial base.

The town has become one of the fastest-growing in the province. That growth brings demand for engineers, planners and finance professionals. However, many local families cannot afford the cost of university study.

How Lephalale supports students

The municipality funds a bursary, known in recent calls as the Mayoral Bursary Fund. It forms part of the municipality's public-service role to develop people in its area. The scheme focuses on fields the local economy relies on. These include financial studies, civil, chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering, town and regional planning, and mining-related studies. Other scarce skills may also qualify.

The bursary covers tuition fees, accommodation and meals. Students with financial need can also receive prescribed textbooks. Preference goes to applicants who took mathematics, commerce, physical science or technology at school. Study must be full-time at a recognised public tertiary institution in South Africa.

The scheme is aimed at residents whose parents or guardians are unemployed or classed as indigent. In other words, it is a needs-based community bursary.

What to know before applying

You must live in the Lephalale municipal area and hold a matric certificate. A consistently good academic record also counts. Application forms can be downloaded from the municipal website or collected from the Civic Centre or local libraries. Completed forms go to the municipal offices by post or hand delivery.

Supporting documents usually include certified copies of your ID and matric certificate, recent academic results, proof of admission, parents' or guardians' IDs and income documents. You may also need proof of residence, a motivational letter and a CV. Recent closing dates have fallen at the end of January, and late applications are not accepted.

Shortlisted applicants take psychometric assessments and attend interviews. The municipality also carries out a means test that can include home visits. Therefore, be honest and consistent in every document you submit.
