About the Macmillan Foundation

The Macmillan Foundation is a registered non-profit company. SNAPP Architects founded it to support training, empowerment and education in South Africa's architecture profession. The Foundation is based in Centurion, Gauteng. Its work centres on one clear aim: helping previously disadvantaged women to finish advanced architecture studies.

Architecture remains a field where Black women are still under-represented. A postgraduate degree is often the step that leads to professional registration. However, extra years of study cost a great deal, and many talented graduates cannot afford them. The Foundation tries to close that gap.

How the Foundation supports students

The Macmillan Foundation bursary funds postgraduate architecture study at accredited South African universities. It pays tuition fees only, and it sends the money straight to the student's institution. The Foundation asks for proof of registration and an academic tax invoice before it pays. Living costs, books and accommodation are therefore not covered.

Reports describe the award as a grant for one year of study. For that reason, students in longer programmes should plan how to fund the remaining time. Some universities also list the bursary on their own funding pages, which helps students find it.

Paying the university directly has a clear benefit. The money goes to the fees account, so it cannot be spent on anything else, and the student does not wait for a refund. However, it also means you must register first and then send the Foundation your proof of registration and invoice. Students who cannot pay a registration deposit should speak to their university finance office early.

What to know before applying

The eligibility rules are specific. Applicants must be South African citizens and Black women, as defined by the B-BBEE codes. They must be under 35 when they complete the qualification. They should be studying, or planning to study, postgraduate architecture at an accredited South African university. A strong academic record is required, and applicants must have no criminal record.

Deadlines matter. For the 2027 academic year, the closing date was 1 November 2026. Future dates will differ, so check the official page on the SNAPP website. Also prepare your academic transcripts, a certified ID copy, proof of acceptance or registration, and a short motivation.
