About MMEG

Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG) is a non-profit public charity based in the United States. It was founded in 1981 and carried the name Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund for many years. Its mission is to improve the lives of women and children by helping exceptional women from developing countries study.

The organisation has so far given about 5.6 million US dollars in direct support. More than 600 women from over 80 countries have received grants. They have studied fields such as engineering, information technology, health sciences, education, social studies and law.

Applicants come from all over the developing world, and the grant reaches women in many careers. A nurse, an engineer and a lawyer could all qualify, as long as their goals serve women and children. Therefore, a clear community purpose matters more than the subject itself. Because the grant is not a full bursary, it is wise to apply for other funding as well.

How MMEG supports students in South Africa

MMEG runs several regional programmes, and South Africa has its own. It supports women who study at selected South African universities. The grant is open to many fields, from certificate studies to postdoctoral research. Instead of a single subject, the charity looks for women whose studies will help women and children in their communities.

Grants are modest compared with a full bursary. In earlier years, awards of up to 7 000 US dollars were reported for the South African, Latin American and Caribbean programmes. As a result, many recipients combine the grant with other funding. Always check the current amount on the official website.

What to know before applying

Applicants must identify as women and be at least 25 years old by the deadline. They must also be nationals of a country on the MMEG eligibility list. Women from other eligible countries who live in South Africa need a valid study permit. Relatives of staff at the World Bank Group, the International Monetary Fund or the Inter-American Development Bank cannot apply. The same rule covers relatives of MMEG board members.

The South African call is open once a year. Applications run from 15 May to 14 September. That window is long, but strong applications need time, so start early.
