About Mercedes-Benz South Africa

Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) is the local arm of the German carmaker. Its plant in Gately, East London, in the Eastern Cape, has built vehicles since the late 1950s. Today the plant makes the C-Class sedan for both the local and export markets, in left-hand and right-hand drive. It is one of the largest manufacturing employers in the province, and it is part of a wider global production network.

A plant like this needs more than assembly workers. It needs engineers, technicians, software specialists and well-trained artisans. As a result, the company invests in education. It runs a Learning Academy, formerly the Technical Training Centre, which trains artisans and serves as a trade test centre. It also offers a bursary programme for university students.

How Mercedes-Benz supports students

The MBSA bursary programme aims to find high achievers at Grade 12 and tertiary level. It offers financial help for study as well as hands-on experience. In recent calls, the support has covered tuition fees, meals, accommodation, stationery and an allowance. Bursary holders may also work at the East London plant during vacations. This vacation work lets them apply theory in a real factory setting, and it gives them a head start when they graduate.

The programme has focused on technical fields. Recent calls listed industrial, electrical and mechanical engineering, mechatronics, and computer engineering, information technology and software development. Students must study at a recognised South African university.

Students who prefer a trade route can also look at artisan training through the Learning Academy. This path is separate from the university bursary, and it leads to a trade test and a recognised qualification. Compare both options carefully and choose the one that suits your marks, interests and career plans.

What to know before applying

Entry requirements are demanding. Matric applicants have needed an overall average of at least 70%. Engineering applicants have also needed at least 65% in mathematics or physical science. The company has said it gives preference to first and second-year students, and to students who live in the Eastern Cape. If you are already at university, your current results will count heavily.

Applications are usually made online through the Mercedes-Benz careers portal during a set window, often in the second half of the year. However, dates and fields change, so confirm them on the official careers page. Prepare certified copies of your ID, your latest results and proof of registration or acceptance before the portal opens.

Finally, read the contract terms carefully. Bursary agreements normally include conditions about academic performance and about any service period after graduation. Details are not confirmed here, so check them in the current call before you accept an offer.
