About Mezzanine
Mezzanine, registered as Mezzanine Ware (Pty) Ltd, is a South African digital solutions company. It was founded in 2012 and has its headquarters in Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape. The company is a subsidiary of the Vodacom Group. Its teams build mobile and digital technology for businesses and public-sector organisations across Africa, in areas such as agriculture, health, financial inclusion and education.
Software is the heart of what Mezzanine does. As a result, the company needs a steady supply of skilled Computer Science graduates, and its bursary is one way of finding and supporting that talent early.
How Mezzanine supports students
The Mezzanine bursary is an academic merit award for full-time first-year students who study Computer Science. It is aimed at students who show promise but may lack the resources to complete their studies. The company says the bursary may cover tuition and university accommodation. It does not guarantee that every expense will be paid.
Money is only part of the offer. Mezzanine also gives recipients job shadowing and networking opportunities with its staff. For example, a student can see how a working product team operates before they graduate. That exposure can make later job applications much stronger.
Mezzanine is clear that the bursary does not guarantee a job offer after graduation. The award also covers the first year of study only. If you want funding for later years, you must reapply, and your case will be assessed again on its own merits.
What to know before applying
The published requirements are specific. You must be a South African citizen with a valid ID number, and the company's recent adverts say you must be based in the Western Cape. You need a matric average of at least 65% and a place at an accredited university in the province for full-time undergraduate Computer Science study. You also must not hold another bursary for the same year.
In addition, applicants must have no criminal record and a clear credit record. The company states that awards follow merit and financial need, in line with its employment equity plan. Each person may submit one application only, and late applications are rejected.
Successful candidates must confirm acceptance within a short time and sign a contract with Mezzanine. Dates change every year. Recent rounds opened in March, with shortlisted applicants contacted by the end of that month. Check the Mezzanine careers page for the current round, and apply early.
Mezzanine publishes each bursary round as a separate advert, so read the one that matches your intake year. Because the award covers only the first year, plan early for how you will pay for later years. Ask your university's funding office about continuation options and apply for other bursaries at the same time. Even so, a first-year award from Mezzanine helps you settle into university life with fewer money worries, and the contact with its engineers can shape your career plans.
