About the Moshal Scholarship Program
The Moshal Scholarship Program is a global non-profit that works in South Africa and Israel. Its aim is simple. It finds academically strong young people from poor households and helps them reach university. Moshal believes that a good degree is one of the surest ways out of poverty, and it backs that belief with full funding.
In South Africa, the programme focuses on two broad areas, namely STEM and Commerce. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These fields tend to lead to stable careers, and they are areas where South Africa needs more skilled graduates.
How Moshal supports students
Moshal is a scholarship rather than a simple tuition grant. Reported benefits include full tuition, a monthly living and meal allowance, a laptop and structured mentorship. Funding is tied to selected partner universities, which have included well-known institutions such as UCT, Wits, Stellenbosch and the University of Pretoria. The exact list can change, so check it on the official Moshal portal.
Eligible degrees span a wide range. Examples include engineering, computer science, data science, medicine, pharmacy, accounting, economics and financial sciences. Moshal does not fund every course at every campus, however. You need a place in an approved degree at an approved university.
Support also goes beyond money. Scholars join a community of peers and mentors, which helps them cope with the pressure of first year. This reflects Moshal's wider goal of social change through education, rather than a plan to recruit staff for one employer. There is no formal employment work-back obligation.
What to know before applying
Moshal sets a strict income limit. Reported household income must not exceed R200,000 per year before deductions. That ceiling is lower than the limit used by many other bursaries, so the scholarship is aimed at families with real financial need.
Academic standards are high. Published guidance mentions about 70% for English, Mathematics and Physical Science and, or, Accounting, depending on your chosen degree. You should be in matric or have completed it, and you need acceptance into an eligible degree. Treat these figures as a guide, because requirements may change from one intake to the next.
Applications are made online through the Moshal portal. Prepare your latest results, proof of household income and identity documents ahead of time. For example, payslips or a sworn affidavit may be needed if your parents do not earn a regular salary. Always read the current criteria and closing date on the official Moshal channels before you apply, and beware of anyone who asks you to pay a fee for an application.
