About N3 Toll Concession

N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) is a private company that runs the N3 Toll Route under a long-term partnership with the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL). The concession began in 1999. N3TC designs, finances, builds, operates and maintains a 415 km stretch of road. It runs from Cedara in KwaZulu-Natal to Heidelberg South in Gauteng.

This road is a vital trade link. Trucks use it to move goods between the port of Durban and the industrial heartland around Johannesburg. Tourists and daily commuters use it as well. Because the route passes through many small towns and rural areas, the company has a close relationship with the communities along it.

The Touching Lives Community Bursary

N3TC channels much of its social investment into the Touching Lives Community Bursary Programme. The aim is simple. Students who live next to the toll road should get a fair chance to finish their degrees. The bursary is therefore open only to people who live in specific municipalities along the corridor, and proof of residence matters a great deal.

The programme targets students in their third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree, or in an Honours year. Recent intakes focused on accounting, civil engineering, information technology, marketing, and mathematics and science teaching. These fields fit the needs of the company and of the wider region, including its schools.

The award covers tuition fees and mandatory textbooks. In some cases N3TC may also help with extras such as accommodation, although it decides this itself. Selection weighs academic strength and financial need together, so the bursary is not reserved for top achievers alone.

What to know before applying

Applicants must be South African citizens and have no outstanding student debt. Recent adverts asked for an overall average of at least 60%. You also need to live in one of the listed municipalities in Mpumalanga, the Free State, Gauteng or KwaZulu-Natal. The list can change, so check it against your address first.

Expect to supply certified copies of your ID and academic record, an admission letter, a current fee statement, proof of residence and a CV. Recent calls also asked for reference letters from university lecturers. The closing date usually falls early in the year, and late applications do not receive consideration.

Keep in mind that the bursary is for later-year students. First- and second-year students do not qualify, so it suits someone who already has a solid record at university. If you are close to that stage, start collecting your documents and lecturer references now.
