About Netcare

Netcare is the largest private hospital group in South Africa. Its network includes acute and specialised hospitals, day clinics, primary care services and occupational health. It also runs the Netcare 911 emergency medical service. The group's head office is in Sandton, Johannesburg.

The group also trains its own health professionals through Netcare Education. This private higher education institution was established in 1989. It has campuses in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban North, Gqeberha and Cape Town. Training is delivered through a faculty for nursing and ancillary healthcare and a faculty for emergency and critical care. The second faculty covers paramedic education, advanced life support and first aid.

How Netcare supports students

South Africa has a long-standing shortage of nurses and other clinical staff. Private hospitals compete with the public sector for the same pool of qualified people. For this reason, Netcare invests in training. Netcare reports that around 3,300 students have registered with its nursing faculty each year in recent years.

Bursaries and student-nurse funding are generally linked to Netcare Education and to nursing and emergency care programmes. Reports describe merit-based awards that may cover tuition and, in some cases, other study costs. Students also gain clinical placements in Netcare facilities, where experienced staff guide them. This hands-on exposure builds confidence and helps new graduates settle into hospital work quickly.

Fees for private nursing programmes are significant, so employer support can make a real difference. However, funding is not guaranteed, and the number of awards varies from year to year.

What to know before applying

Employer-linked healthcare bursaries in South Africa often come with a work-back period. Under such an agreement, you work for the funder for a set time after you qualify. If you leave early, you may have to repay part of the money. Netcare does not publish one standard contract for every intake, so ask for the exact terms before you accept an offer.

Programmes must be accredited by the relevant professional councils, such as the South African Nursing Council for nursing qualifications. Check that your chosen course and campus are accredited before you pay any fees.

Nursing and emergency care are physically and emotionally demanding careers, but they are also among the most secure. Demand for trained staff remains high in both the private and public sectors. If you enjoy working with people and can handle pressure, funded study through an established group such as Netcare can be a strong start. Compare it with other nursing bursaries and read every agreement before you decide.

Be careful about scams, too. Netcare has warned the public about fake messages on WhatsApp that offer free nursing training. Genuine opportunities come only through Netcare's official channels. Visit the official Netcare website for the latest intake dates, entry requirements and funding information.
