About Palabora Mining
Palabora Mining Company, trading as Palabora Copper, runs a copper mine, smelter and refinery complex on the edge of Ba-Phalaborwa in Limpopo. The operation began in 1956 as a joint venture between Rio Tinto Zinc and Newmont Mining. It worked as an open pit from 1964 until 2002. After that, it moved underground with a block-cave mine that cost roughly 465 million dollars and was expected to extend production by about two decades.
Rio Tinto sold its stake around 2013. Today a Chinese consortium holds the majority, alongside South Africa's Industrial Development Corporation. The company remains the largest employer in the Ba-Phalaborwa area and has anchored the local economy for generations.
How Palabora supports students
The Palabora Copper bursary targets the skills a mine, smelter and refinery needs. Past calls have listed mining, metallurgical and electrical engineering, geology, chemistry, environmental science, mine surveying, process control and supply chain management. The list changes, so read each year's advert closely.
The mine's history explains its needs. The move from open pit to underground block caving called for rock engineers, electricians, metallurgists and surveyors in large numbers. Students who study these fields in Limpopo find a major employer close to home. However, the bursary does not promise a job, so treat vacation work or later placement as a bonus and not a guarantee.
Awards have covered registration and tuition fees, accommodation, meals, a prescribed book allowance and a laptop. Selection rests on academic merit. Preference goes to candidates from the Ba-Phalaborwa communities, which past adverts have named as places such as Namakgale, Lulekani, Maseke and Phalaborwa town. The funding is also renewable each year, provided the student keeps up good results.
What to know before applying
Past calls asked for South African citizens aged 16 to 35 who are in Matric or have completed it. Applicants studied full-time at an accredited South African university or university of technology. They also needed a clean criminal record and no other sponsorship. Women and students with disabilities were encouraged to apply.
Applications go through an online portal. Expect to upload a certified ID copy, Matric results, academic records, an acceptance letter and proof of residence from a municipal or tribal authority. Closing dates have fallen in the second half of the year, but they vary.
Keep your proof of residence current, since the preference for local candidates depends on it. A letter from a municipal or tribal authority should match the address on your application.
Public sources describe the bursary as merit-based and community-based. They do not list a specific work-back period. In addition, the company has said it is not obliged to offer vacation work or internships. Therefore, confirm the current terms with Palabora before you apply.
