Polokwane Municipality governs the city of Polokwane and the areas around it in Limpopo's Capricorn District. Its offices are at the Civic Centre, on the corner of Landdros Mare and Bodenstein Streets. Like every local government, it delivers water, sanitation, roads and electricity to residents.

How the municipality supports students

The external bursary helps permanent residents of the municipal area who want to study further. It supports a first degree, a National Diploma or a National N Diploma. Studies must take place at an accredited public institution in South Africa, and the municipality expects applicants to study full-time. Private colleges and universities are not covered under the published conditions.

The programme leans towards fields the municipality needs itself. These include financial management, water and sanitation, and electrical or civil engineering. However, the bursary is not limited to those areas. Other scarce and critical skills in commerce, business and government may also qualify.

Differently abled students are particularly encouraged to apply. The size of each award is not stated in the public notices we could confirm, so ask the municipality what is covered in the current year.

What to know before applying

Eligibility rules are fairly strict. You must be a South African citizen who lives permanently in the Polokwane municipal area. You must also come from a disadvantaged background, and you may not hold another bursary. Grade 12 learners and matric completers can apply.

Applications need certified copies, not older than three months, of several documents. Examples include your ID, your Grade 12 results, a parent or guardian's ID and proof of residence. Proof of residence can be a municipal bill or a letter from a traditional authority. You should also provide an acceptance letter from your institution and household income documents. Add any supporting certificates that apply, such as a disability record.

Forms are available from the municipality's cluster offices and the Human Resources Development office, and they can also be downloaded from the official website. Recent calls closed in early December. Late or incomplete forms are not considered. Successful candidates sign a bursary agreement with the municipality.
