About Rand Water

Rand Water is South Africa's largest water utility. It was established in 1903 and became fully active a couple of years later, supplying bulk water to the Witwatersrand. Today it draws water mainly from the Vaal River system and treats it at large plants such as Zuikerbosch and Vereeniging. It then supplies potable water in bulk to municipalities, mines and industries in Gauteng and parts of neighbouring provinces. Its head office is at 522 Impala Road in Glenvista, Johannesburg.

Reports say the utility serves around twelve million people. Running pipelines, pump stations and treatment works at that scale needs many skilled people. As a result, Rand Water funds students who can later strengthen the water sector. Its supply area covers roughly 18,000 square kilometres, so careers in the sector can be found in plants, laboratories, offices and the field.

How Rand Water supports students

The Rand Water External Bursary Programme is open to students outside the organisation who study towards qualifications the utility needs. Listed fields include engineering, water sciences, public health, geomatics and architecture. They also cover law and accounting. This mix reflects the fact that a water board needs lawyers, accountants and planners as well as engineers and scientists.

Bursars must complete their studies within the timeframe in their individual contract. Support is aimed at full-time students at recognised tertiary institutions, and each contract sets out what the bursary covers. Check the programme page for the current list of costs covered.

What to know before applying

Published criteria say applicants must be South African citizens from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. You must be under 35 years old and hold an academic average of at least 65%. You should be registered full-time and must not already receive another bursary. Matric or an equivalent qualification is required, and strong marks in your major subjects help. Remember that 65% is a minimum, and a higher average will make your application more competitive.

The application window is short and changes each year. For example, the 2026 round was reported to close on 7 May. Do not rely on old dates. Instead, check the official Rand Water bursary page for the latest closing date and the documents to upload. Public information does not confirm a formal work-back or guaranteed-employment duty after graduation for this programme. Other water-sector bodies do set such conditions, so you should not assume that Rand Water does or does not. Read your contract with care, and ask Rand Water to explain any employment terms before you sign it.
