Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM)

Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) is a large- and medium-calibre ammunition manufacturer formed on 1 September 2008 when several of Denel's munitions divisions, including Somchem in Somerset West and Wellington, Swartklip, the Boksburg plant and Naschem in Boskop, were brought together under the German Rheinmetall Defence Group. The joint venture is owned 51% by Rheinmetall and 49% by the South African state-owned defence group Denel, and it is a significant player in artillery, mortar and infantry ammunition systems as well as munitions plant engineering, exporting from its South African manufacturing sites to defence customers internationally.

RDM funds postgraduate and undergraduate engineering bursaries, including through its Rheinmetall Resonant South Africa Bursary Programme, because the highly specialised technical and engineering skills its munitions manufacturing depends on are scarce in South Africa; the bursary is explicitly framed as building a pipeline of engineering talent for the company's own long-term workforce needs. Bursary recipients studying toward a Bachelor of Engineering degree may, on completion, be offered a place on RDM's Engineering Graduate Programme, but the company's own materials describe this as an opportunity extended to strong candidates rather than a guaranteed or contractually bonded work-back obligation. RDM has publicly described itself as pursuing an aggressive growth strategy driven by rising global demand for ammunition, which underlines why building a local pipeline of qualified engineers matters strategically to the business rather than being a peripheral CSR gesture.
