About Richards Bay Coal Terminal
Richards Bay Coal Terminal, known as RBCT, is the largest coal export terminal in the world. It opened in 1976 on the KwaZulu-Natal coast, and later expansions raised its design capacity to 91 million tonnes a year. Several mining companies own the terminal together and use it to ship coal overseas. Shareholders include Anglo American, Glencore and South32.
The terminal handles a very large share of South Africa's export coal. It runs around the clock, so it needs skilled engineers, artisans and operators. The company has also said that its training programmes have changed the make-up of its skilled and management staff over time.
How RBCT supports students
RBCT runs a community bursary fund as part of its wider skills programme. Recent listings show funding for electrical and mechanical engineering, accounting, computer science or information technology, and human resources management. These fields match the real needs of a busy bulk-handling site, from maintenance to finance.
The terminal also trains people outside university. For example, it has advertised a four-year millwright apprenticeship that follows industry and SETA standards. It has also offered a plant and rail training programme for people with matric or an NTC3 qualification. As a result, a young person in the Richards Bay area can find several routes into industry, depending on their interests.
Geographic preference matters here. Past bursary adverts gave priority to students from the King Cetshwayo District in KwaZulu-Natal, although people from other places could still apply. The adverts also asked for proof of financial need.
What to know before applying
Applicants must be South African citizens with a matric certificate, and they must study full time at an accredited institution. A typical application includes a form, certified copies of ID and academic results, proof of registration, parents' income documents, a motivation letter and a one-page CV. Shortlisted candidates may be asked to complete an assessment. RBCT describes its programmes as a way to build skills for its own operations and for the wider sector. Graduates who perform well may find openings at the terminal when vacancies exist. However, the company has not published a fixed work-back period. Check the official RBCT website for the current closing date and terms, and read any bursary contract carefully before you sign. Candidates can strengthen an application in a few ways. Show clearly why you need financial help, and explain your interest in the terminal's work. Keep your marks consistent, since academic results guide the shortlist. In addition, learn what a coal export terminal does, from stockpiling to ship loading, so that you can answer interview questions with confidence.
