About Richards Bay Minerals

Richards Bay Minerals, usually called RBM, is South Africa's largest mineral sands producer. It began operating in 1976 and works the coastal dunes near Richards Bay on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. Rio Tinto holds 74% of the business. Blue Horizon, a consortium linked to host communities, holds 24%, and an employee trust owns the remainder.

The operation produces zircon, rutile, iron and slag. These products go into everything from paint to electronics. Rio Tinto reports that RBM added about R7 billion to the South African economy in 2024, and that it spent R72 million on community development that year. As a result, RBM is one of the biggest employers around Richards Bay and the uMhlathuze area.

How RBM supports students

A mining and processing site needs steady technical skills. For that reason, the RBM bursary programme funds students who are heading into careers the business relies on. The Core stream covers BSc or BEng study in extractive metallurgy, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. The Non-Core stream supports other fields the company needs, such as law and safety management.

Awards go to Grade 12 learners who show strong academic potential and real financial need. Selection gives priority to women, people with disabilities and other groups that mining has historically under-represented. The intake is small. Some programme listings mention only four to eight new bursars a year, so competition is stiff.

Bursary holders also gain practical experience. Vacation work and internships let students see plant operations first-hand before they graduate. A successful bursar may then move into a graduate placement programme at RBM or elsewhere in the Rio Tinto group. Listings describe a two-year graduate development programme as the usual next step.

What to know before applying

Work-back terms deserve a careful look. Some listings say bursars must work for RBM for as many years as the company funded their studies. However, the official pages do not spell out a fixed contract. Ask RBM for the bursary agreement before you accept any award, and read the service clause closely.

Dates, amounts and qualifying degrees can change from year to year. Check the Rio Tinto RBM page for the current application window. Have your ID and recent academic results ready, because engineering streams expect strong marks in mathematics and physical science. If you miss one intake, you can still look at other mining bursaries and learnerships while you wait for the next one.

RBM also has a long record of land care. Rio Tinto says the operation has rehabilitated more than 3,600 hectares of mined dunes with native vegetation. It has also set up heritage centres that record local archaeology and culture. For a student, this shows the range of careers inside a mining business, from metallurgy and electrical maintenance to environmental work and legal support. A bursary in one of the listed fields can therefore open more than one path.
