Rio Tinto/ Richards Bay Minerals (RBM)

Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) is a major mineral sands mining and processing operation on the KwaZulu-Natal coast, majority owned and operated by Rio Tinto, one of the world's largest diversified mining groups. RBM dredges and processes heavy mineral sands to produce titanium dioxide feedstocks, zircon, and other by-products for global markets, and is one of the largest private employers in the Richards Bay and uMhlathuze area, making it central to the local economy.

RBM's bursary programme runs two streams: a Core stream funding BSc or BEng study in extractive metallurgy, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering -- the technical skills the operation runs on -- and a Non-Core stream supporting fields such as law and safety management that the business also depends on. Awards go to Grade 12 learners with strong academic potential and demonstrated financial need, with selection prioritising women, people with disabilities, and other historically under-represented groups, reflecting both a scarce-skills problem in South African mining and Rio Tinto's transformation commitments as a major employer in a historically white-dominated technical sector.

Recipients gain work-integrated learning through vacation work and internships, with a potential pathway into graduate placement programmes at Rio Tinto.
