About Royal HaskoningDHV
Royal HaskoningDHV is an international engineering and project management consultancy. Its global headquarters are in the Netherlands, and it works in areas such as water, infrastructure, buildings, energy, mining, maritime, aviation and industry. The South African office is in Woodmead, Johannesburg.
The local business has a long story. It started as Stewart Scott International, which was formed in 1922, and later traded as SSI. In 2012, a merger between DHV and Royal Haskoning created the name used today. As a result, the firm brings together local roots and global know-how.
How Royal HaskoningDHV supports students
The company runs a bursary programme for undergraduate students at South African universities. Past calls offered funding for degrees in civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and data science, at BSc or BEng level. The fields reflect the skills that the firm needs for its water, infrastructure and industrial projects.
Notice that electrical and mechanical engineering sit alongside civil engineering on the list. You therefore do not need to be a civil student to qualify. Engineers at the firm tackle a wide range of water, infrastructure and industrial problems, so vacation work can expose bursary holders to many different kinds of real projects.
In the call we could confirm, the bursary covered tuition fees, accommodation and allowances. It also offered vacation work during the holidays. This work lets students see how a consulting engineer operates, and it helps them build a professional network before they graduate.
Graduates may then be offered a job. The company has stated that employment is possible, subject to graduate vacancies being available. In other words, a bursary does not guarantee a position, but it puts you in a strong place when a vacancy opens.
What to know before applying
Applicants must be South African citizens who have finished matric and study at an accredited South African university. In the call we reviewed, you needed to have completed your first year and kept an average of at least 65%. Financial need and academic performance were the main selection factors.
Applications are made online. Typical supporting documents include a certified ID copy, academic transcripts, proof of registration and proof of parental income. Deadlines have fallen in the second half of the year, for example at the end of September in 2022. However, the programme details, fields and closing dates change, so check the careers section of the official website before you apply.
Finally, prepare early. Gather your documents, ask your institution for an up-to-date academic record, and write your answers carefully. A neat, complete application shows the discipline that consulting engineers need every day.
