SAPOA (the South African Property Owners Association) is the representative body for the commercial property industry in South Africa, based in Rosebank, Johannesburg. It represents owners, developers, financiers, and managers of commercial, retail, and industrial property, and its core work includes lobbying government and municipalities on property-related legislation, setting professional standards and lease norms for the sector, running industry research and data services, and hosting the annual SAPOA Convention and Property Development Awards, the industry's flagship events.
The SAPOA Bursary Trust was formed in 2009, funded largely by SAPOA's own member companies, with the explicit aim of transforming the demographic profile of the built-environment professions, redressing historical exclusion, and addressing a persistent shortage of skilled Black South African property professionals. Bursaries are awarded to academically strong students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds studying property-related fields — including architecture, construction studies, property valuation and management, real estate, and urban and regional planning — at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and cover tuition, accredited accommodation, textbooks, and structured mentoring.
Because the fund is structured as an independent trust rather than a direct company bursary, it does not bond recipients to a single employer. Publicly available SAPOA material describes no formal work-back or employment obligation attached to the award; the trust instead pairs funding with mentoring intended to draw graduates into the property sector generally, and applicants should confirm current terms directly with the SAPOA Bursary Fund (bursaryfund@sapoa.org.za).
