About Seriti Resources

Seriti Resources is a South African coal mining company with majority black ownership and control. It was formed to take over thermal coal operations that Anglo American sold in a deal worth about R2.3 billion, which closed in 2018. Those assets included the New Vaal, New Denmark and Kriel mines. Seriti later added the New Largo project. The company's head office is at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg.

Seriti's coal mostly feeds the power sector. Its mines supply Eskom stations such as Lethabo, Tutuka and Kriel, so the company plays a direct part in keeping the lights on. Much of its activity centres on Mpumalanga, one of the country's main coal provinces. Mining today needs more than miners. It also needs engineers, surveyors, geologists and environmental specialists.

How Seriti supports students

The company runs a bursary scheme for high-performing students in scarce and critical skills. In the most recent call, for 2026, the funded fields were electrical and mechanical engineering, environmental studies, geology, mine surveying, mining engineering, and ventilation and occupational hygiene engineering. Fields can change between years.

The package in that call paid full tuition fees for the year, accommodation and meals, and a pocket money allowance. Successful students may also get vacation work. After graduation, Seriti may consider them for work-back placements, depending on business needs. In other words, a job is possible but not promised. Seriti also offers a learnership. What to know before applying

Eligibility in the 2026 call was strict. Applicants had to be South African citizens. They also had to study towards a degree or diploma at NQF level 7 in one of the listed fields. The call was open to students entering their second, third or fourth year in 2026, with an average above 60%. They had to be registered at a public university or university of technology, and the closing date was 22 December 2025.

Expect the dates to move each year. Seriti has opened applications late in the year for the following academic year, so start gathering your documents in good time. These usually include a certified ID copy, your latest academic record, proof of registration and a motivation letter. Finally, ask about service conditions before you accept an award. Read the contract carefully, and keep your marks up so you can stay on the scheme. Apply only through Seriti's official channels or your university funding office, and never pay a fee to apply.
