South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE)

About SAIEE

The South African Institute of Electrical Engineers, or SAIEE, is the professional body for electrical, electronic and computer engineers in Southern Africa. It was formed in 1909. Its home is SAIEE House in Observatory, Johannesburg. Members rely on the institute for professional development, technical events and a trusted voice for the profession.

The institute also invests in the next generation. Because the country needs more engineers, SAIEE gives awards to students who show talent but face financial pressure. This focus on education has become a core part of its work.

How SAIEE supports students

SAIEE offers three main funding routes. The Education and Bursary Fund makes a number of awards each year for undergraduate study. The Past President's Scholarship can support up to four years of study, and it may cover tuition, accommodation, books and living costs. The ISH/SAIEE Post Graduate Research Scholarship is meant for researchers aged 30 or younger who pursue master's or doctoral studies, with an emphasis on high voltage engineering.

The core bursary is for students working towards a degree, diploma or certificate in electrical, electronic or computer engineering. Earlier listings describe cover for tuition and books, and renewal for further years. However, amounts and terms are set at the institute's discretion each year. Students at traditional universities and universities of technology can both apply, so diploma students are not left out. Each of the three awards has its own rules, so read the right one before you start.

What to know before applying

Applicants must be South African citizens who study at a South African university or university of technology. SAIEE guidelines ask for matric results of at least 60% in mathematics and physical science, and 50% in languages. Complete documents are essential. These include certified identity papers and proof of parental income.

Selection looks at several factors. Academic merit comes first, but financial need, demographic representation and family circumstances also count. Preference goes to students who have completed a year or more of their studies, although good matric results can still earn an award. Dependants of SAIEE members receive preference, so members should mention the link in their application.

SAIEE has not been shown to attach a work-back obligation to its bursaries. Even so, always read the offer letter, because conditions can change. Closing dates and forms are not fixed from one year to the next. For that reason, visit the bursaries page on the official SAIEE website, or contact its reception, to learn when the next call opens.

Finally, apply early and submit a tidy, complete file. A clear motivation about your interest in electrical engineering can help your application stand out.
