About Thungela Resources

Thungela Resources is a South African thermal coal producer. The company began independent life in June 2021, when Anglo American demerged its South African thermal coal business. Its shares started trading on 7 June 2021, with a primary listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and a standard listing in London. At the time of the demerger, the operations supplied around 19 million tonnes of export thermal coal a year. Anglo American has since sold its remaining stake, so Thungela now stands apart from its former parent.

Coal mining needs a steady supply of technical skills, and that explains much of Thungela's interest in education. Mines depend on mining engineers, geologists, metallurgists, and mechanical, electrical, industrial and chemical engineers. These professionals plan the work, keep equipment running and manage safety. Skilled graduates take years to develop, so a bursary lets a company identify promising students early and introduce them to the industry before they finish studying.

How Thungela Resources supports students

Thungela's careers site promotes bursaries for top-performing students in these fields. It also speaks about support for people in financial need, and for those who need practical experience to complete mining-related qualifications. The company links financial help with exposure to real work. For students, that exposure can matter as much as the money, because many technical qualifications require workplace experience. In addition, Thungela says that its appointments follow Employment Equity targets, so transformation forms part of its selection approach.

Applications run through the third-party CareerWise platform and not through a form on Thungela's own site. Students register there and enter the reference code for the current call. Thungela also says that anyone who already applied on CareerWise in the same year is considered automatically. Because scam adverts are common in the bursary sector, always start from Thungela's official careers page to confirm the current code and closing date.

What to know before applying

Does Thungela expect work-back from its bursars? Its bursary page does not say, and we could not confirm a specific term. Mining company bursaries often include a service obligation, usually tied to the years funded, but that general pattern does not prove what Thungela's contract requires. Ask directly and read any agreement closely before you sign. Also check what happens if you fail a module, change your course or decide to leave the sector.

Students who are unsure about a coal career should think about the future of the industry too. Thermal coal faces long-term pressure from the energy transition, and that pressure led Anglo American to exit the business. Even so, the engineering, geology and metallurgy skills that this funding supports can transfer to other kinds of mining and heavy industry.
